Robserecaps Thirty – episode 65 the Making of Deadpool part five

by Joe

Is the journey over? This was supposed to be a four part series and here we are at part five. When it comes to the Rob, the only thing that’s for sure is nothing’s for sure. Be sure to check out the episode for yourself!

  • When the Rob would go to Tim Miller’s studios, the Rob would bring some folks with him, including Gina Carano, which is how she ended up getting cast in the first movie
  • Even though the first Deadpool movie was in developmental hell for five years, there were no drastic script changes
  • Summer of 2010 (the Rob thinks it’s 2011 at first) at San Diego Comic Con, Marvel showed footage of Thor and Captain America and had the whole Avengers cast on stage. Nothing on Deadpool
  • Now, summer of 2014 at San Diego Comic Con, DC revamps Hall H with new screens to debut footage for Batman v Superman, footage of Mad Max Fury Road is shown and Marvel was presenting Age of Ultron. Still nothing on Deadpool
  • On the Rob’s drive home from San Diego in 2014, he gets a call from Tim Miller saying Deadpool would have killed at the convention that year. By the time the Rob completed his 90 minute drive home, the test footage had ‘leaked’ online. To this day, Ryan Reynolds is still trying to track down the mysterious leaker
  • Prior to this, when asked about the footage, the Rob would act it out at conventions
  • Simon Kinberg, the writer of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, came on as the ‘show runner’ of the X-Men films and was a big advocate of the Deadpool movie and really got it moved into production
  • After many false alarms, it was the Rob’s son Luke who broke the news that production had begun
  • The first big script change happens, Kane is cut due to budgetary issues
  • Tim asked the Rob, “For your cameo, do you want to be grabbin’ ass at the strip club with Stan or at at Sister Margaret’s?” Because the Rob has children, the Rob chose the bar scene
  • The first thing the Rob noticed about Ryan Reynolds is how tall and commanding he is, such a big physical space
  • The Rob got his own personalized banner for his on set chair, Ryan made a big production about saying the banner cost $10.50 and that’s what the Rob is worth to the franchise
  • On set, the Rob was predicting a $65 million opening weekend and was told to knock it off as talk like that would jinx the production
  • In 2015, Marvel decides to abandon Hall H at San Diego Comic Con so Fox snuck into their slot with Deadpool
  • when the trailer was shown, the room shook like a 6.7 earthquake, overshadowing X-Men Apocalypse that had shown right before it. The crowd chanted for it to be shown again
  • the Rob went to the Entertainment Weekly party and got plastered with TJ Miller
  • Even though Deadpool had won San Diego that year, there were some reshoots and a final test screening in December of 2015, even though Deadpool had been tracking at 91% from prior test screenings, slight things like jokes were punched up through ADR. But none of the new jokes worked, the opening scene got zero reaction and the Rob was afraid it was gonna get cut
  • Bryan Singer was sitting next to the Rob at this screening, telling the Rob how jealous he was of what they did with an R rating
  • This test screening had the Ferris Bueller ending where Cable was teased for the next movie, the Rob was surprised it didn’t get stooged off, even though all the people at the screening signed an NDA
  • One woman at the post test screening Q & A really liked WHAM. 14 of the 20 people in the focus group rated the film “awesome”, the highest possible recommendation. The other six only said “very good” this jumped the score up to a 94, higher than Avatar, Emma Watts the head of the studio joked, “Now get back to work and get me those other six points”
  • The Rob’s kids were too young to get into Deadpool so they bought tickets for Zoolander 2 and snuck in
  • Next week begins an autopsy of those early 2000’s comics the Rob hates so much
  • The Rob closes this episode that the success of the first Deadpool film has opened up all sorts of opportunities for him
