Weekly Question – Best Lex Luthor 07/14/16...
posted by Joe
Ah, Lex Luthor, Superman’s and possibly the DC Universes biggest adversary. A character that gone through so many looks and iterations but always one motivation, to have it all. Unlike last week’s Doctor Doom, while Lex sees himself as the hero of his own story, he’s patently incorrect. And also unlike Doctor Doom, he’s actually had (at least) one good live action portrayal. But for many, most people know Luthor from the variety of DC Animated Serieses from the 90’s. You know, Batman: the Animated Series is so good, I think people don’t give Superman: the Animated Series a fair shake. I am always so surprised in the comics how easily the populous of the DCU fall for Lex’s shtick. They even voted him President of the USA. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best Lex Luthor? Best look? Best story? Whatever! Just tweet us with your answer using the hash tag #LBHQuery. Don’t like or have Twitter? Weekly Question – Best Doctor Doom 07/07/16...
posted by Joe
Arguably the greatest villain of all time, possibly (if you ask Todd) the greatest character of all time, Victor von Doom, the ruler of Latveria, Doctor Doom! Whether being the rival of the Fantastic Four, specifically RICHARDS! or taking on multiple heroes in a Secret Wars like fashion, I tend to lean towards the more magical side of Doom. Not being the Doom aficionado that others may be, my favorite Doom will probably not line up with most. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best Doctor Doom? Notice, even as a joke, I did not include any movie version. Just tweet us with your answer using the hash tag #LBHQuery. Don’t like or have Twitter? Need more room to explain your choice? Weekly Question – Best Tie-In Comic 06/30/16...
posted by Joe
So when I said ‘tie-in’ comics (see that hyphen there) I had a specific thing in mind. Of course, it would mean to most a toy or movie or TV show that came first then was followed by a comic, but I also meant things like this. Taking a corporate mascot, like the Kool Aid Man, and giving him his own comic. This, along with this next one I think were issued to every suburban kid in the 80’s and 90’s. What about re-purposed comics that you got at Pizza Hut? Needed something to read while waiting your turn to play Joust, I guess. But what about promotional comics created from whole cloth to raise awareness of drugs or the dangers of smoking? This one brought us the greatest Titan no one ever knew, the Protector! So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best Tie-In Comic? Whatever that means to you, just no pictures of Doctor Who. Just tweet us with your answer using the hash tag #LBHQuery. Weekly Question – Best Black Canary 06/23/16...
posted by Joe
Black Canary. A legacy character like no other. With DC’s loosey goosey wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff, is a founding member of both the Justice Society and multiple iterations of the Justice League, partered with multiple folks, other teams, alligened with pretty much everyone from Batman to Green Arrow to the Blackhawks and all points in between. She’s even been a rock star in her most recent iteration. As per the course, however, many people may know Canary from the Arrow TV show. Now, I’m not even done with season one, so I understand the mantle has been passed around and changed quite a bit since debuting. She also took part in one of the standout scenes in one of the most underrated series of the early ’00s, JLA Year One, by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best Black Canary? Best version? Best story? Whatever! Just tweet us with your answer using the hash tag #LBHQuery. Don’t like or have Twitter? Weekly Question – Best Black Widow 06/16/16...
posted by Joe
Natasha Romanoff, like many of the folks we cover in the Best Blank, have had a resurgence in the mainstream mostly due to other media. However, Black Widow has been around in comic since the 60’s, where she started off as a villain. To further muddy the issue, some stories have shown she’s been around since the 40’s, fighting alongside Captain America and Wolverine in World War II. She’s been a Defender, an Avenger, even leader of the Avengers, she’s never been an X-Man or Inhuman, but the day’s not over yet, but everyone these days knows her from her portrayal by Scarlett Johansson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I think, however, she works best as a solo act, especially when not bogged down by the usual super powered folks she surrounds herself with. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best Black Widow? Best version? Best story? Whatever! Just tweet us with your answer using the hash tag #LBHQuery. Don’t like or have Twitter? Weekly Question – Best Pre-1989 06/09/16...
posted by Joe
This suggestion comes from our listeners and it’s a doozy. At first, I thought this would be tough, to throw some suggestions in the post, however, to paraphrase myself from this week’s show, pick any year, any decade, any era, and there, you will find a Batman story. Over at Marvel, they had two big guns that were changing the way comics would be, possible forever. First, before he redefined Batman (see above), Frank Miller was changing Daredevil in ways still seen today, up to the current Netflix series. Also, Chris Claremont and John Byrne were turning the, at the time, forgotten and cancelled X-Men into the world wide phenomenon we know them as today. And not to be outdone, the indies took Daredevil and the X-Men, mashed them together and came up with another long lasting franchise in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best comic book prior to 1989? Character? Single issue? Full run? Whatever! Just tweet us with your answer using the hash tag #LBHQuery. Weekly Question – Best Green Arrow 06/02/16...
posted by Joe
Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow, the hero of Star City and analogue to last week’s Best Blank, Hawkeye. Oliver started out as a rival of sorts to Batman, a millionaire who decided to use his cast wealth to fight crime, a literal Robin Hood. And like Batman himself, went through a bit of a dark period in the early 80’s in the Longbow Hunters. And much like the other big guns in DC, he was also taken off the board in the early 90’s and replaced by a younger version of himself, his here to unknown son, Connor. I was looking for a pic of him with the boxing glove arrow, but this is the closest I could come. Being a long standing member of the Justice League, Green Arrow always gets used in other media stuff, animated series, video games and so forth, but he really had a resurgence with the CW Arrow TV show. Which I’m gonna finish one day. Some day… So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best version of Green Arrow? Is it Ollie? Is it Connor? Is it Amell? What’s best story? Whatever! Weekly Question – Best Hawkeye 05/26/16...
posted by Joe
Hawkeye is one of my favorite characters. Anytime he gets a solo book, is on a team, whatever, I’m there! Just something about his bravado in the face of all these sooped up dudes (and dudettes) makes him endearing. I would be remiss, in compiling this image gallery if I did not include this image. and image so iconic that they replicated it in Captain America Civil War featuring this fella as Clint Barton Just so you know, it was very difficult to find a suitable, non-removed, non-Pintrest related image of Jeremy Renner. So while I’ve always been a fan of Hawkeye, it wasn’t until the recent Matt Fraction run where the character finally got not good but GREAT stories. But it wasn’t all about Clint, it also pushed Kate Bishop into prominence as well. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best version of Hawkeye? Is it Clint? It it Kate? Is it Jeremy? Weekly Question – Best Crime 05/19/16...
posted by Joe
I love Crime comics. I never used to, hell, I never even knew there was anything outside of superhero comics until the HBO TV series Tales from the Crypt. Many of the episodes were culled from other EC Comics and I found myself enjoying those episodes more than the ‘scary’ ones. I was hooked, but this stuff was widely out of print for a 13 year old with a paper route. I did find cheap reprints of this one though. Again, my young naiveté, I ended up parting with my reprints of Will Eisner’s the Spirit in lieu of the Image comics boom and have been kicking myself ever since. I did not return to crime comics until the mid 2000’s. Crime books taking place in the Bat-universe? I’ve heard of this Ed Brubaker before…HEY, this is really good! Now, I was back in. If it had Brubaker’s name on it and dealt with shady people doing shady things, I was there sight unseen. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best crime comic. Weekly Question – Best Aquaman 05/12/16...
posted by Joe
Aquaman gets a bad rep. I always wonder where it began. Was it the sketch on Saturday Night Live? Or the skit on the State or numerous burials on Family Guy. I just don’t know how it stuck, since for a good part of the 90’s he was pretty bad ass. A founding member of the Justice League, analogues to King Arthur and Camelot, power levels on par with Wonder Woman, a cool supporting cast, what’s not to love? Now, he was underused in the JLU animated series, but was fantastic, nay, OUTRAGEOUS in Batman the Brave and the Bold! He even has a featured role in the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe played by a fan favorite actor! Did you you think he was gonna have MORE of a role in Batman vs. Superman? For some reason I did. At least DC is actively trying to make Aquaman cool. So our question to you, dear listener, what is the best interpretation of Aquaman? The best Aquaman story? Whatever!
