Robserecaps Three – episode 33 the Cable Guy part two

by Joe

The preview on thisone seems to be more about Cable in other media, toys, movies, etc. but let see where this journey takes us. Be sure to give the episode a listen yourself:

  • claims to be working on Snake Eyes (issue two is about 5-6 weeks late) and another secret project, based on recent news, not New Mutants
  • the Rob really loves the points of articulation and packaging of toys
  • talks about Marvel not working with Fox about the toy licenses in the last five years, citing the Deadpool 2 movie figures just making it to store shelves now
  • Tim Miller (director of Deadpool) wanted to cast an unknown as Cable, but people like Dolph Lundgren, Russell Crowe and Ron Perlman were auditioning for the role
  • “Tickled you with mystery” is how the Rob handled the Cable early appearances
  • The Rob fought to get Wolverine in New Mutants to help build Cable’s backstory, but only got one line “You’re moves have improved since the last time we met”
  • the Rob has good advice for up and coming creator types in sometimes you have to say no to an assignment when it doesn’t feel right (last episode’s Doctor Strange as Kolchack the Night Stalker) or following someone like Walt Simonson on X-Factor
  • States Jim Lee felt that scar and cybernetic implant should have been on the same eye, the Rob wanted each eye to tell a different story
  • Feels the new villain Ahab created by Chris Claremont for the Days of Future Present event was a rip off of Cable and an attempt by Claremont to take Cable for himself
  • Things get a bit muddy here as the Rob calls ‘Spider-Man #1’ ‘Spawn #1’ a few times, but he’s talking about Spider-Man #1
  • Shortly after Spider-Man #1 comes out, Jim Lee calls the Rob to tell him he got ‘X-Men #1’ for next year which upset the Rob as his peers are leaving him behind
  • The Rob called Bob Harris (the editor) saying that since he was taking over writing and drawing and inking New Mutants with issue 98, he pushed for a new number one and an “X” in the title
  • The Rob picked Scott Lobdell as his scripter because “he bothered me the least” and calls him “pesty”?
  • the Rob’s hustle at this time was to provide for his family, his mother was working as a secretary after his father took gravely ill and was able to buy a condo for them
  • Sven Larsen in marketing was a big help in getting X-Force #1 made
  • States New Mutants #98 was the most fan mail Marvel had gotten on a single issue in 15 years, sent to him in a box as big as a washer or dryer
  • Gets a call from Todd McFarlane saying that the Rob creating so many new characters (signed over rights on 40 characters) was making editors put pressure on him and others to make new characters
  • the Rob starts talking about royalty checks like $10,000 to $30,000 on Fleer trading cards (per character) and $70,000 in 1991 for the Cable action figure license
  • Around the 62 minute mark, the Rob not only gives a spoiler warning for the end of New Mutants #100 but swears (multiple times!) for the first time I can remember in listening to the podcast
  • Talks about Geoff Johns and Robert Kirkman citing New Mutants #100 “fueling their creative fires”

*Please note* the thoughts and ideas in this post do not reflect those of my co-host, Todd. He doesn’t care about any of this.
