Comic Book Podcasts to Check Out
I listen to a lot of podcasts.
A LOT of podcasts.
I have a pool of almost 50 podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis, listening to anywhere from 4-6 a day. I also appear on two podcasts, Longbox Heroes (found on this very site) and Dadstractions on a regular basis as well as frequent appearances on a variety of other podcasts.
I’m not going to say I’m a podcast expert, but I’m definitely can speak from experience.
So today, I’m going to recommend to you some of my favorite comic book podcasts. The ones that bring a smile to my face, teach me something and have even inspired me as a podcaster.
War Rocket Ajax: A weekly podcast co-hosted by comic book writers Chris Sims (Down, Set FIGHT!) and Matt Wilson (Copernicus Jones: Robot Detective). Each episode features recommendations, comic reviews, interviews with some of the top creators in all of comics and for the 2014 calendar year, they are compiling the list of Every Story Ever.
Where Do I Start? Being weekly, found at War Rocket Ajax, look through the archives for your favorite writer or artist’s appearance as a guest. That should be enough of a hook to bring you in.
House to Astonish: Admittedly, the show I’ve cribbed most of the format and structure of Longbox Heroes from. A bi-weekly (sometimes more) podcast where Al Kennedy and Paul O’Brien cover the news, dabble into Previews, talk about recent comics and try to give a new coat of paint to some morts in The Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.
Where Do I Start? Al & Paul recently did a live charity show, they also strayed from their usually format with Holds to Astonish having the recently passed wrestler Koblad and myself on as guests. All their episodes, as well as previews of WWE PPVs, current X-Men storylines and more, can be found here.
Aw Yeah Podcast: Art Baltazar and Franco of Tiny Titans and Aw Yeah Comics fame join John Siuntres (host of his own podcast, Word Balloon have a fun, free form conversation ranging from everything to comics to wrestling to Planet of the Apes to Bigfoot!
Where Do I Start? That’s a tough one. Over at their website, they are up to 95 episodes, but the sheer size of each episodes and in jokes can make things over whelming. I say just jump right in!
Rachel and Miles X-Plain the X-Men: Rachel Edidin and Miles Stokes (former editors at Dark Horse Comics) take you through the often crazy and always convoluted history of your favorite (and hated) Uncanny Mutants. Even if you are a newbie when it comes to the X-Men, Rachel & Miles will X-Plain it all!
Where Do I Start? We’re all familiar with the X-Men cartoon from the 90’s? Episode three, found here, featuring guest co-host the afore mentioned Chris Sims try as they might to tie the comic and cartoon universes together. It’s a hoot!
Check them out & let us know what you think in the comments below. Did I miss your favorite podcasts? I’d love the recommendation!
– LFC
Most of the podcasts I listen to I listen to them because LFC suggested them to me. Granted, I do not listen to any other comic book podcasts. Since Longbox Heroes will SURELY be easy to get I’ll be listening to it every week now. I had many issues trying to obtain WLB through my podcast program of choice. I’ll give these other shows a listen, too.
If there’s a person on this planet who knows how to recommend podcasts, it’s LFC. I listen to all of these, which the exception of Aw Yeah. And that’s only because I didn’t have enough time to really listen to it and pick up on the in jokes.
Comicvine’s podcasts are pretty legit.
Also, I listened to all of X-Plain the X-Men and the latest War Rocket Ajax in the past couple days, and enjoyed both. Bout to give House to Astonish a shot.
I dig Comicvine too. I really enjoy the in depth interviews on Word Balloon with John Siuntres. Thar pretty long episodes, but i’ve been turned on to a lot of smaller books through them. He also does great convention coverage.
